New Room Notes 2019

These are the notes and thoughts from the 2019 New Room Conference in Nashville, TN. Glad I got to be a part of it and though the speakers were really solid, there was definitely a sense during the whole event that things are moving forward and toward revival and awakening.

There is no biblical precedent for revival and God’s movement outside of prayer.

Peter Greig

Abraham “stood” before the Lord. 99% of prayer is just showing up. Getting close to God.

Peter Greig

Sometimes it’s harder to steward the favor of God than to resist the enemy.

Peter Greig

It’s hard at times to know what is good and what is God.

Peter Greig

I’m tired of relegating prayer to the lovely old ladies. I don’t want to live a life of vibrant prayer and faith through others. I want to keep pushing into prayer.

Peter Greig

Prayer is a partnership with God.

Peter Greig

Christians don’t understand the power and authority they have in the name of Jesus. God is stirring passion and calling people to a greater faith and expectancy. We must believe in miracles.

Peter Greig

Do not get stuck in the work itself, it will all be wasted labor. John Wesley

We can’t stand for a church that has a form of godliness but no power.

David Thomas

Revival comes when the roof blows off, but also when the floor drops out. We land in a place of humility.

David Thomas

Leaders come to this place like this to kindle fires.

David Thomas

47% of millennial Christian say sharing faith (evangelism) is WRONG.

Craig Springer

Half of the Christian adults have only two spiritual conversations a year.

Craig Springer

Evangelism methods handed down to millennials is a cassette tape while the culture is listening to Spotify playlists.

Craig Springer

Jesus responded to questions with a question at a ratio of 40 to 1.

Craig Springer

Non-Christian says the least effective person to tell them about faith is the person who is good at debating and has all the answers.

Craig Springer

Proclamation is important but we also need conversation so it becomes personalized. Learn the key concepts and skills of listening. It requires dependence on the Holy Spirit.

Craig Springer

Even if many are coming to our churches because of revival, our prayer should remain, “More of you, Lord.”

Craig Springer

Holiness is for this generation.

Miriam Swaffield

Evangelists shouldn’t be concerned with an impressive fire but a sustainable one.

Miriam Swaffield

You can’t separate holiness and mission, awakening, or revival.

Miriam Swaffield

The Holy Spirit changes things in the world… it isn’t just to keep you pure.

Miriam Swaffield

You shouldn’t worry about your kid going to the the university because they may lose their faith. You should pray that the university is scared because your kid is showing up with great faith.

Miriam Swaffield

Holiness may not seem like a word for today. But we’re not going to rename it, we’re going to reclaim it!

Miriam Swaffield

Jesus ate with a whole bunch of people who would never make it to a church welcome dinner. He joined them where they were – with the disarming presence of God.

Miriam Swaffield

Jesus isn’t intimidated by sin. He’s a God who comes all the way to us.

Miriam Swaffield

“I’d rather be a 50-year old that has lived the story that a 30-year old that can tell them.”

Miriam Swaffield

“Holiness is not what you do but who He is.”

Miriam Swaffield

Pastors have a tendency to whitewash their lives as they stand before their congregations. We need to stop that.

Jack Deere

Going underground with sin is bad…  it flourishes there.

Jack Deere

Sick homes don’t have friends. Sick homes have secrets.

Jack Deere

A prayer to grow in passion for Jesus: “Father let me love the son of God like you do.”

Jack Deere

Don’t rejoice in your commitment to Jesus,  this will lead you to become self-righteous. Rejoice in Jesus.

Jack Deere

There are five aspects to the movement of the church and the gospel: 1) Apostle, 2) Prophet, 3) Evangelist, 4) Shepherd/ Pastor, and 5) Teacher, but the modern churches primarily zeroes in on the last two. We need all five for the church to thrive.

Alan Hirsch

Paul planted the Gospel, not churches. Jesus builds the churches.

Alan Hirsch

If you take out the “one who is sent” you will have a church that doesn’t move forward or grow.

Alan Hirsch

“Prophet” is mentioned around 100 times in the New Testament. It’s not just an Old Testament thing. When the covenant is broken the prophets step in and call for repentance. We need this for the church.

Alan Hirsch

Apostles,  Prophets,  Evangelist,  Shepherds, Teachers: which one does the church not want or need? Why do we seem to try to function in the ministry model of Jesus with only two primary roles?

Alan Hirsch

You can’t say your church isn’t an apostolic ministry – the church is the one sent! You can’t say you don’t believe in evangelism – you can’t outsource that. If you are Christian or a Christian church, you believe in evangelism. Same with each of these five areas.

Alan Hirsch

“Where you are is not who you are.”

Romal Tune

We’d rather stick with the pain that we know rather than face the process of dealing with the pain.

Romal Tune

It’s not fighting for what you want, it’s about surrendering to what God already has for us.

We have sown apathy in the western church and we’re now managing decline. We need to repent of apathy towards God.

Jon Tyson

You’re in revival, why keep praying? To fend off lukewarmness.

Jon Tyson

How much more of a crisis will it take for the western church to realize that the need is right now – right in front of us. If something doesn’t happen now, we’re in trouble.

John Tyson

Pray outloud for revival in your heart, home and church.

Jon Tyson

Pray for depression and anxiety to leave and for fire to come. Fire of the heart, the home and the church.

Mentor to College Student

We don’t need to pray for rain – it’s already raining. The day of Pentecost it began raining and never stopped. The Holy Spirit is being poured out. What we need is an awakening.

Timothy Tennet

We will get the awakening we sow for.

JD Walt

Bishop Swanson

We’ve been telling the story, but we’ve been telling it without power.

Bishop Swanson

We’ve been telling grandma’s story, John Wesley story, revival story, we need to tell how god has changed our lives – our story!

Bishop Swanson

It’s not enough for the next generation to intellectualize this, they want to experience God’s power, see it and know it’s real.

Bishop Swanson

The reason we don’t go into certain situations is because we don’t really believe God is with us or can bring change.
