5 Ways To Commit To Having A Great Team

If you’re in ministry, you’re most likely working with teams. Pastors work with ministry staff, leadership teams, church councils, boards, deacons, and missions. Student and Kid’s Ministry Leaders work with volunteers, parents, and students. Worship leaders work with band members, vocalists, tech ministry, and potentially other teams.

Whether your teams are short-term or have been serving together for years, it might be good to remind yourself of the following five commitments and share them with your teams. Consider this list as a team member as well as a team leader:

1) Commit to giving 100%

A team member needs to know what is expected. A leader needs to make the team goal clear and concise. As we work together with the “why” in mind, everyone begins to give all they have to make it happen.

2) Commit to getting better

When every team member commits to getting better, the overall team wins. That means preparing in advance, practicing, taking tasks and deadlines seriously, staying mentally engaged, and believing in their roles on the team. When a team leader gets better, everyone moves forward. Even simple things, like starting meetings on time and communicating details, can have a huge impact on attitude and momentum.

3) Commit to staying positive.

While serving together to accomplish a great mission will always produce stress, a healthy team remains positive. As we have frank discussions and disagreements about a direction, we must let each other be heard; and then decide and move forward together. Great teams also encourage each other. Teams flourish as we serve together with joy, lift up others, encourage new ideas, and say good things about each other in public.

4) Commit to the team’s mission.

Committing to the team’s mission is foundational for great teams. Everyone must know the mission and purpose, and understand their roles.

5) Commit to each other.

Without a commitment to each other, there’s no team. Each member must commit to the team as a whole. The whole team needs to care for one another and support each other in accomplishing the mission.
