Moving Ahead When You Can’t See What’s Coming

“I never had a clear vision. I just kept moving forward.” – John C. Maxwell

I recently read Jeff Henderson’s book, “What to Do Next: Taking Your Best Step When Life Is Uncertain.” I like the encouragement in this book. It’s good for any ministry leader thinking about transition or what’s next.

Here are a few thoughts about moving forward when you’re not exactly sure what that is.

Keep moving forward

We don’t make rash, unwise decisions or risk it all for something that isn’t going to matter, but we do need to keep moving forward. Put one foot in front of the next. Invest time in gaining a little win each day and make it happen.

Consider Others

One question you can ask yourself about a life change or other big decision you’re facing is, “How will this influence people closest to me?” We can’t think only of ourselves. We need to consider how our decisions will impact the lives and hearts of the people who are closest to us.

Be Positive

Ask yourself: “What if this did work?” and “What if my best days truly are ahead?” These questions might help you make a difficult decision by bringing clarity and motivation to life’s forks in the road.

“It’s easier to stay put than to keep moving forward… that’s why many of us get stuck, especially as we get older.”

Replace Limiting Thoughts

Sometimes change seems impossible as we age. We resist the work and mental strain it will take. We think thoughts like, “It’s worked this way for so long, why change now.”

Replace limiting thoughts with forward-moving thoughts like these:

  • “You’re not retiring, you’re rewiring!”
  • “The scariest place to be is the same as last year. No growth, no challenges. Just the same.”
  • “Failure is an event, not a person.”

Instead of asking, “Is this working?,” ask, “What am I learning?”.

You are a hero on a mission. Keep taking steps to move ahead, and live out your calling and dream.
