Positive Action Has The Power to Make Us Feel Great

God created each of us like no other person in the world. We’re each uniquely and wonderfully made. Psalm 139 teaches us to praise the Lord for the magnificent and tiny details that make up our body, soul, mind, and spirit.

I recently read about three hormones that are released in our bodies as we do positive things. When we do good works, something clicks. When we help others, our lives are enriched. Though the Bible doesn’t specifically mention these specific hormones (now known through modern science), the idea is covered by the principles in such scriptures as Proverbs 11:17: “Your kindness will reward you…”

When we help people, share in generosity, encourage others, enjoy relationships, and care for our bodies as the temple of the Holy Spirit, we grow healthier.

I recently read the books, Holy Moments by Matthew Kelly and Leaders Eat Last by Simon Sinek. Both books mentioned the power of these three hormones, so I thought I would share them here on my blog to encourage each of us.

Here they are:

  • Serotonin – Regulates our mood and gives us good, happy feelings overall. You can increase Seratonin through exercise, sunshine, a good diet, a balanced lifestyle, and activities you enjoy.
  • Dopamine – Allows us to experience pleasure and motivation. You can increase Dopamine through many of the same ways as Seratonin; and through accomplishing things. Even accomplishing little things will help you feel good about what you have done.
  • Oxytocin – Comes through connection and warmth. You can increase Oxytocin with such activities as meals with friends, hugging, listening to music, meaningful conversations, touching, fist bumps, etc. Collaborating with God and trusting Him as we live life to the fullest brings an Oxytocin high.

These things come from within as a result of the amazing ways we were created. I don’t want to downplay the resistance to these things. It can be easier to sit on the couch, eat whatever tempts us, and fill our minds with screens.

But the good news is that these hormones are natural, God-given gifts that come from the inside out. These hormones are one reason Paul was able to speak of joy, even when he was in prison.

Let’s take action and do the small things that make significant increases in how we respond to life.

The more we grow in Christ; spend time in prayer; live a healthy lifestyle; and respond to the holy moments of helping, giving, encouraging, and living a faithful life, the better we feel – literally.

I’m not a scientist or mental health professional, but I’ve simplified this so I can remember to take these action steps each day: Prayer, connection with others, eating well, having fun, and most of all, staying connected to Jesus through His Word (John 15).
