I recently ran across a cartoon of two guys getting a laptop and internet to a person who was living in the jungle and had obviously never seen anything like it before. The line on the cartoon was, “next month, we will be back with antidepressants.”
We don’t want to focus on the negative, but I think most of us would agree we’re pressed on every side with messages, expectations, and temptation. In our modern age, you can get a million opinions on any topic – some topics a person shouldn’t even be considering – in a moment.
In many ways, this weighs us down. It causes some anxiety. It definitely adds new challenges to living a faithful, God-centered life.
However, faith in Christ does just the opposite. It’s filling, life-giving, and satisfying. His work in our life, the free gift of salvation, gives us peace, hope and a new purpose. And it makes a difference in our physical bodies as well!
I was reflecting on some of the ways scripture teaches that faith in Christ is physically good for you. In a time when it seems like desperation for God is waning and the world seems to be falling apart, I hope this is a reminder not to give up! Keep seeking the Lord! Keep growing in his word. Keep gathering for worship. And keep praying and trusting.
Here are six ways faith in God is physically good for you:
Peace In Your Mind
And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:7
You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose mind is fixed on you! Isaiah 26:3
Health To Your Bones
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and shun evil. This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones. Proverbs 3:5-8
Smile On Your Face
Those who look to him are radiant, and their faces shall never be ashamed. Psalm 34:5
A glad heart makes a cheerful face, but by sorrow of heart, the spirit is crushed. Provers 15:13
Fire In Your Belly
But if I say, “I will not mention his word or speak any more in his name,” his word is in my heart like a fire, a fire shut up in my bones. I am weary of holding it in indeed, I cannot. Jeremiah 20:9
With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation. Psalm 91:16
You shall walk in all the way that the Lord your God has commanded you, that you may live, and that it may go well with you, and that you may live long in the land that you shall possess. Deuteronomy 5:33
Gray hair is a crown of glory; it is gained in a righteous life. Proverbs 16:31
For “Whoever desires to love life and see good days, let him keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit; 1 Peter 3:10
Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise), “that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.” Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. Ephesians 6:1-4
The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever. Isaiah 40:8
Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. Philippians 4:8
Of course, responding to Jesus and living life as a follower isn’t always easy. And it’s not something we do for ourselves alone – but the byproducts of living for Jesus is deep joy, a sense of purpose, a delight in true freedom and these things bring about great days in a persons life!
