INTRODUCTION:
Some ideas and notes for drumset methods and lessons.
GOALS & OUTLINE:
1. Setup, Posture, and Grip
Before playing, you must ensure you are sitting correctly to avoid injury and maximize efficiency.
- Ergonomics: Set up the drum stool (throne) so your thighs are slightly sloped down, not flat. Keep your back straight.
- Grip (Matched Grip): The most common beginner grip. Hold the stick between the thumb and index finger (the “fulcrum”) at about 1/3 of the way up the stick.
- Relaxation: Keep your hands and wrists loose. Allow the sticks to bounce rather than forcing them down.
- Identify Components: Learn the names of the parts: Snare, Hi-Hat, Bass Drum, Toms, and Cymbals.
2. The Single Stroke Roll & “Eights”
This is the “bread and butter” of drumming.
- The Technique: Alternate hands: Right-Left-Right-Left (RLRL).
- Focus: Make sure the hits are even in volume and rhythm, not just fast.
- “Eights”: Play eight consecutive strokes on the snare with the right hand, then eight with the left, alternating to build stamina.
3. Introduction to the Metronome and Basic Counting
Playing in time is more important than speed.
- Use a Metronome: Always practice with a metronome (or a free app) to build a steady internal clock.
- Count Out Loud: Count “1, 2, 3, 4” consistently while playing. This helps you understand subdivisions (quarter notes vs. eighth notes).
4. Basic Rock Beat (The “Money Beat”)
This is the most common beat in music, used in countless songs.
- Hi-Hat: Play 8th notes (count “1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &”) with your right hand on the hi-hat.
- Snare: Hit the snare drum with your left hand on beats “2” and “4”.
- Bass Drum: Hit the bass drum with your right foot on beats “1” and “3”.
- Coordination: Start slowly, focusing on getting all limbs working together.
5. Double Stroke Roll & Introduction to Rebound
This teaches you how to use the drum’s natural bounce (rebound) for efficiency.
- The Technique: Play two strokes with the right hand, then two with the left (RRLL).
- The Concept: Rather than lifting the stick twice, play the first hit with your wrist, and let the stick rebound for the second, faster hit.
6. The Single Paradiddle
This is a fundamental rudiment that combines single and double strokes to improve coordination.
- Pattern: Right-Left-Right-Right, Left-Right-Left-Left (RLRR LRLL).
- Application: It is excellent for moving around the drum kit, as it allows you to start the next pattern with the opposite hand.
7. First Simple Song
Choose some simple songs to play along with and make it fun.
Key Tips for Beginners
Record Yourself: Listening back is the best way to hear if you are actually in time.
Practice with a Metronome: It cannot be overstated—consistent timing is everything.
Practice Pad: You can learn all the basic rudiments on a practice pad, which allows for quiet, effective practice.
