Then Jesus asked them, “When I sent you without purse, bag or sandals, did you lack anything?” “Nothing,” they answered.
Luke 22:35
This is a question referring back to a time in Luke 10:4 when Jesus sent out the disciples to the surrounding communities. He specifically said, don’t take a purse, sandals or a bag, just go. The Message says, “You don’t need this stuff, you are the equipment.”
So now, as the Last Supper is unfolding, Jesus is asking them to remember when…
When you were sent with nothing, did you lack anything?
The disciples reflect back and realize they didn’t lack anything.
There are a couple things about this simple section of scripture:
- Jesus calls us to remember and think back.
- Jesus gives us opportunities to learn through experience.
- Even the last supper is an invitation to eventually “remember” every time.
Even more, this year, we’re called to remember.
Remember God’s faithfulness in the past. Remember God’s provision over the years. Remember the story of the ultimate sacrifice and the power of the resurrection on Easter.
I like Jesus words here… “Hey you guys, remember when I sent you out with nothing – did you lack?”
“Well, come to think of, Lord, we didn’t. Wow – hadn’t really thought about it until now, but no, we didn’t!
Holy Week is a time to remember the power of God at work still today.
