How Our Family Saved $5,500 With Water

waterOver the last 14 years, our family has saved approximately $5,500 by ordering water to drink at restaurants.  During New Year’s Eve of 2000, my brothers and I all made a commitment to not drink soda (soft drinks, pop, whatever you call it in your part of the world) for the year and see who could go the longest.  Two of us are still battling it out to see who will win this little challenge. Who knows how long it will go.

The upside is the savings over the years.

According to a 2011 study of 4,000 adults, Americans eat out 4.8 times per week!  I figured I may eat out about 2 times a week.  If that’s the case, here’s the math:

2 times out x 52 weeks  = 104 x 14 years  = 1456 x $1.89 (avg soft drink cost) = $2,751.84 x 2 (my wife and I) = $5,503.68.

This doesn’t take into account our kids or the ministry teams we have traveled with over the years.  The number could easily be double or triple this amount.

So, if you want to save $5,500 – drink water at restaurants.
