The preacher said to the poor farmer, “If you had a horse, would you give it to the Lord?”
“Yes.”
“And if you had a cow?”
“Absolutely.”
“And a goat?”
“Sure.”
“A pig?”
“Now, that’s not fair!” protested the farmer. “You know I have a pig!”
We give to the Lord out of what we have, not out of what we wish we had or hope to have. You don’t learn the art or experience the joy of giving when you give out of surplus, but when you give out of your poverty. Jesus desires that above any other kind of gift. Total surrender is what it’s all about.
43 Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. 44 They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on.” – Matthew 12:43-44
