Here’s a powerful prayer for every believer as we seek God each day.
Part of prayer is about listening. It’s about asking God questions and allowing His word to speak to us. The Spirit convicts us, especially as we open up our hearts for God to come in.
This simple prayer from Psalm 139 is a prayer of invitation to search the heart of a believer:
Search me, God, and know my heart;
test me and know my anxious thoughts.
See if there is any offensive way in me,
and lead me in the way everlasting.
— Psalm 139:23-24
Search me: Does the Lord have permission from me to search? It’s been said that Jesus is a gentleman and won’t come in unless invited. This “search me” invitation is one of the best ways to allow God to come in to our lives and hearts.
Know my heart: Sometimes, I’m not even sure I fully know my heart. I waffle easily. I over-commit. I don’t leave enough time to reflect. I wind up trying to determine things on my own and usually on the fly. Inviting God to know my heart is the first step in understanding it more myself.
Test me: This may be a scary prayer to pray – test me.
Know my anxious thoughts: Conversations around anxiety are becoming more and more prevalent these days. I hear about it all the time. And in some ways, this prayer addresses it head on. The Lord knows our anxious thoughts before we do. And yet, God is still willing to join us there – addressing the fear and weakness.
See if there be any wicked way in me: This is where conviction comes in. When darkness is brought to light we get a sense of God’s holiness and how He wants us to live.
And lead me in the everlasting way: We’re trusting God to lead us – each step of the way. Both for life here and now and for eternity.
